How it All Began
The idea behind What to Draw came about by two separate encounters with my kids.
It first began when my then 3 year old daughter brought me a stack of drawings she had made for me one morning. We looked through them and then I hurriedly set them on my night stand where they sat for the next couple of weeks. Later on, I was looking through the stack with my daughter and she could not remember what the drawings were of. I kept my favorites but the majority of the stack ended up in the trash.
Flash forward two years and there I was sitting in an hour long church meeting with my 5 and 9 year old children. I could not focus on the meeting in between the short breaks between attempts to keep them quiet. Finally I gave them both some paper and a pencil and told them to draw something. A few seconds passed and then I felt another tug on my sleeve, "Dad, what should I draw?". In a last attempt at keeping them quiet I told them to draw a monkey eating a banana. And then....silence and a couple of great drawings!
The artist in me quickly thought of something that ended up turning into much more than a couple of drawings on sheets of notebook paper. I thought- what if I could help kids to discover their own creativity, use their imagination and feel a sense of accomplishment. Even better, what if I could make this into a keepsake that my children and I can continue enjoying when they are 25, 30, 40 years old? And the rest is history!
